Price your driveway coating and repair scope

This estimator is for resurfacing an existing concrete driveway, not installing a new slab. It assumes the existing concrete is structurally usable and that drainage is not pushing water under the slab.

Most Ballarat single and double driveways needing resurfacing are 30 to 70 m².

2026 resurfacing price guide for Ballarat driveways

Resurfacing is priced by surface area, preparation time and the coating system. The cheapest quote is rarely the best one if it only sprays over dirt, laitance, loose sealer or oil. On Ballarat homes, the preparation is often the difference between a driveway that still looks tidy in year 5 and a coating that lifts after its second winter.

ItemTypical 2026 rateWhat the rate should include
Clear reseal of exposed aggregate$12 to $25 per m²Clean, dry, compatible sealer and one or two coats depending on wear.
Basic resurfacing coat$45 to $70 per m²Surface preparation, primer where required, spray or trowel texture and sealer.
Decorative resurfacing$70 to $110 per m²Coloured texture, stencil or pattern detail, sealer and non-slip finish.
Crack chase and fill$18 to $45 per linear metreOpen crack, clean, fill with flexible or epoxy product suited to movement.
Grinding and high spots$25 to $55 per m² affectedMechanical grinding where old coating, lips or rough brooming must be corrected.
Oil stain treatment$180 to $480 per drivewayDegreasing and repeat washing. Deep oil may still stain through a light coating.
Joint re-cut or refill$14 to $32 per linear metreClean out failed filler, tidy joint edges and reinstate movement allowance.
Small job minimum$1,800 to $2,500Setup, travel, materials and return visits still apply on a 15 to 25 m² job.

These are realistic residential rates for Ballarat, Lucas, Alfredton, Sebastopol and similar suburbs in 2026. Large acreage entrances and very steep drives can sit outside the table because access, traffic control and curing windows become the main cost.

What moves the price

The four variables that change a resurfacing quote

1. Whether the slab is stable

If the existing driveway has fine shrinkage cracks, surface dusting or faded sealer, resurfacing can make sense. If the slab rocks under car load, has sections dropped by 20 mm, or has cracks that open and close after wet weather, the coating is not the fix. Ballarat’s reactive clay soils make this important because moisture change under the slab can keep moving concrete long after the surface has been made pretty.

2. How much preparation is needed

A clean, sound slab might only need washing, etching and a primer. A driveway with old acrylic sealer, tyre marks, tree sap and spalled edges may need grinding, crack chasing and patching. Preparation can add $800 to $2,500 on a medium driveway, but skipping it is how coatings blister and peel after frost, heat and repeated wetting.

3. The finish system

Clear resealing is the cheapest because the old surface remains the finish. Spray-on decorative resurfacing and coloured texture coatings cost more because they add material, masking and pattern work. Premium flake, multi-colour stencil looks and extra non-slip additives are useful on steep Mount Clear or Buninyong sections, but they are not needed on every flat driveway.

4. Drainage and shade

A shaded Wendouree driveway that holds moss and water beside a brick edge needs more cleaning and a better non-slip surface than a sunny Lucas driveway with good fall. If water runs toward the garage, resurfacing alone will not fix it. Read our Ballarat driveway drainage guide before spending money on a coating over a wet base.

Worked example

A typical Ballarat resurfacing job, added up

Take a 45 m² concrete driveway in Alfredton with a tired plain surface, two shrinkage cracks and light oil marks near the garage. The slab is level, the control joints still line up, and water falls toward the street. This is the type of driveway where resurfacing is usually worth pricing.

The numbers might look like this: decorative texture coating at $72 per m² equals $3,240. Crack chase and fill for 8 linear metres at $28 per metre adds $224. Oil stain treatment adds $260. Non-slip additive on the shaded approach adds $180. The total before any unusual access cost is $3,904, so a fair written quote would likely sit around $3,900 to $4,500 depending on final surface preparation.

The same driveway would be a poor resurfacing candidate if one bay had dropped 30 mm or the garage end had no drainage fall. At that point, spending $4,000 on coating may only delay a $7,000 to $11,000 replacement. We would rather say that before you pay than after the coating telegraphs the same crack back through.

Honest limits

When you should not pay for resurfacing

Do not resurface a driveway just because it has a few stains. If the slab is safe, drains properly and the issue is only dirt or moss, a homeowner can often pressure wash it, treat organic growth and wait another season. Spending $2,000 or more on a coating is not necessary for a purely cosmetic issue you can live with.

Do not resurface a slab that is structurally failing. If there is pumping mud at joints, sections rocking under wheels, exposed steel, deep spalling or trip lips over 20 mm, replacement should be priced. If the surface has been coated several times already, heavy grinding may also make resurfacing too close to replacement cost.

We do not sell resurfacing as a miracle repair. It improves grip and appearance on a stable slab. It does not re-engineer poor base preparation, failed drainage or soil movement. That is why a site inspection matters more than a square metre rate alone.

Resurfacing FAQ

Questions Ballarat homeowners ask before resurfacing

How much does driveway resurfacing cost in Ballarat?
Most concrete driveway resurfacing in Ballarat costs $45 to $110 per m2 in 2026, depending on repair depth, grinding, coating system and sealer. A typical 45 m2 driveway usually lands between $2,800 and $6,500 when the slab is sound enough to keep.
When is resurfacing cheaper than replacing the driveway?
Resurfacing is usually the cheaper call when the slab is mostly level, cracks are under 3 mm wide and less than about 15 percent of the surface has failed. If the slab has sunk 20 mm or more, or if wide cracks keep opening after rain, replacement is normally better value over 10 years.
How long does resurfacing last?
A good resurfacing job on a stable slab commonly lasts 7 to 12 years in Ballarat. Heavy vehicle use, poor drainage and winter moisture can shorten that to 3 to 5 years if the underlying movement is not fixed first.
Can all cracks be hidden by resurfacing?
No. Hairline shrinkage cracks can often be filled and coated, but moving cracks over 3 mm usually show again within 1 to 3 seasons. We will say so before quoting because coating a moving slab is wasted money.
How soon can I park on a resurfaced driveway?
Most resurfacing systems allow foot traffic after 24 hours and light car traffic after 3 to 7 days. In cold Ballarat weeks under about 10 degrees C, curing can take longer and we may hold traffic off for the full 7 days.
Do I need a council permit for resurfacing?
A resurfacing coat inside your property boundary usually does not need a City of Ballarat vehicle crossing permit. If the work changes, widens or reconstructs the crossover on council land, allow for the permit process and a $130 application fee before work starts.

For finish ideas, compare exposed aggregate, coloured concrete and stencilled concrete before choosing the coating style.
