How to compare Ballarat concrete driveway quotes without getting burnt

A fair Ballarat driveway quote should state the m² area, 100 mm slab spec, reinforcement, base prep, drainage, finish, permit responsibility and payment terms. If those items are missing, a $9,000 quote and a $12,000 quote may not be pricing the same driveway.

What a quote must say

What a compliant written quote should make clear

A useful quote is more than a single price. It should let you compare one concreter against another without guessing what is included. For a Ballarat driveway, the key lines are measured area, demolition, excavation, base thickness, compaction method, reinforcement, concrete strength, finish, sealer, control joints, curing instructions and waste removal.

The quote should also say where responsibility changes. The driveway inside your boundary is one thing. The crossover between the property line and the road is controlled by council. City of Ballarat says a Vehicle Crossing Permit is needed to construct a concrete vehicle crossing or bridge on council-owned land, and decorative finishes such as exposed aggregate, coloured concrete, brick pavers and stencilling are not permitted between the building line and the kerb. If your quote ignores that, you may find out when council inspects or when the house is sold.

For larger domestic building work, payment wording matters. Victorian domestic building rules cap deposits at 10 percent under $20,000 and 5 percent at $20,000 or more. Consumer Affairs Victoria also says domestic building insurance documents must be supplied before taking money for work worth more than $16,000 where the insurance requirement applies. For a driveway quote in the $8,000 to $18,000 band, this can be the difference between a normal small deposit and an illegal cash grab.

Common exclusions

The items that often become variations later

The most common surprise is old concrete removal. Some quotes include cutting, breaking, loading, tip fees and site tidy. Others only price the new pour. On a 40 m² driveway, removal can add $1,800 to $3,400 depending on thickness, steel and access. If the quote is silent, assume it is not included until the contractor confirms it in writing.

Pump hire is another common gap. If the truck cannot safely reach the pour, a pump may add $550 to $1,200. Tight rear access, steep blocks in Mount Helen or long setbacks in Smythes Creek can trigger this even when the driveway itself is straightforward. Rock, wet clay, tree roots and unmarked services can also change excavation time.

Drainage is often the variation that homeowners wish they had paid for earlier. A slot drain, pit or channel drain might add $800 to $3,000, but it protects the garage, path and slab edge. If water already sits on your drive, read our driveway drainage guide before accepting a quote that only prices concrete.

Cheapest quote

When the cheapest quote is actually the right call

The cheapest quote can be the right choice when the specification is genuinely the same. If all quotes are pricing a 100 mm plain concrete slab, the same mesh, the same base depth, the same removal scope, the same crossover responsibility and the same drainage allowance, then choosing the lower price is reasonable. A small operator with low overheads can be excellent value.

The danger is choosing a quote that looks cheaper because it is incomplete. A $7,800 driveway that excludes removal, permits and drainage can become a $12,000 driveway after work starts. A $9,900 fixed quote that includes those items may be the cheaper total job. Compare the inclusions before comparing the total.

Also be honest about finish. If the driveway is a side access or rental property and the budget is tight, plain concrete may be the smart call. Exposed aggregate looks better and grips well, but it is not compulsory for every home.

Quote FAQ

Questions to settle before you sign

How many concrete driveway quotes should I get in Ballarat?
Get 2 to 3 written quotes for any driveway over about 25 m2. More than 3 can waste time unless the prices are wildly different, but fewer than 2 makes it hard to see whether thickness, steel and drainage are being priced properly.
What deposit is legal for a Victorian domestic building job?
For Victorian domestic building work, the deposit is capped at 10 percent if the total contract price is under $20,000 and 5 percent if it is $20,000 or more. A $12,000 driveway should not need more than $1,200 up front under that rule.
What should a written concrete driveway quote include?
A good quote states the measured area in m2, slab thickness, mesh, concrete strength, base depth, drainage allowance, finish, sealer and curing timing. It should also state whether old concrete removal, soil disposal, crossover permits and pump hire are included or excluded.
How do I check a Victorian concreter or builder registration?
Use the Building and Plumbing Commission practitioner search and check the name or company against the registration details. For work over $10,000 that is domestic building work, ask what registration class covers the work and keep the number with the quote.
Why can one quote be $3,000 cheaper than another?
On a 50 m2 driveway, a $3,000 gap is often caused by base preparation, concrete thickness, reinforcement, removal of the old slab or a missed crossover allowance. Ask each contractor to price the same 100 mm slab, the same mesh and the same drainage scope before choosing.
What quote exclusions cause the most variations?
The common variation items are rock excavation, tip fees, pump hire, service repairs, council crossover changes, extra drainage and more concrete if the measured area grows. A quote should put likely variation rates in dollars before work starts, not after the truck arrives.
