Stencilled concrete driveways in Ballarat.
The look of pavers, brick or cobblestone — on a single monolithic concrete slab. No joints, no weeds, no settlement. Heritage-Overlay-friendly for Buninyong village and Ballarat Central streetscapes.
How stencilled concrete works.
Pour and screed a coloured concrete slab. Before final set (45–90 min after pour, depending on temperature), roll out an adhesive-backed stencil mat in the chosen pattern. Trowel a contrasting-coloured colour-hardener into the exposed areas (the “mortar joints”). Let it set. Lift the stencil to reveal the pattern, then seal at day 8.
The result is a single slab that looks like cobblestones or brickwork, but with all the structural advantages of a continuous reinforced slab: no weed growth in joints, no individual paver settlement, no recurring sand-jointing maintenance.
Patterns we run.
- European Fan / Cobblestone: the most popular Ballarat pattern. Heritage-appropriate for Buninyong and Ballarat Central.
- Running Brick / Bond: classic brick paver look. Good with red brick veneer homes.
- Hex (Hexagonal): contemporary, suits modern builds. Less common.
- Random Slate / Flagstone: irregular natural stone look. Very heritage-friendly.
- Ashlar (rectangular flagstone): formal, geometric. Good for long acreage driveways.
Where stencilled concrete shines.
Heritage Overlays. The Buninyong village core, parts of Ballarat Central, Bakery Hill and Soldiers Hill all sit under HO planning controls. A stencilled cobblestone driveway is one of the most-approved finishes for street-visible driveways in these zones because it visually echoes the period streetscape.
Long acreage driveways. Stencilled concrete on a 100m driveway looks like 100m of paver work but pours in a single weekend, with no joint maintenance. We’ve done several of these on Yendon Road and toward Scotsburn.
Replacing failed paver driveways. If you’ve got a 20-year-old paver driveway that’s settling, weeding and pothole-prone, stencilled concrete keeps the look but eliminates the maintenance.
Pricing.
Standard stencilled concrete driveway, two-colour, ~50–80m² in Ballarat: $90–$120/m² fully installed. Cheaper than exposed aggregate, more decorative than coloured-only. Custom or multi-colour stencil patterns add $10–$20/m².
Honest tradeoff: longevity of pattern.
Stencilled concrete looks great for the first 5–10 years. After that, the colour-hardener in the “joints” can wear under tyre traffic. The pattern stays visible for 15–20 years but the contrast softens. A re-tint and re-seal every 8–10 years restores the original look ($1,500–$3,000 for a typical driveway). That’s the honest trade vs exposed aggregate, which is essentially maintenance-free for life.
